AC/DC Concert Destroys Charlotte, NC Time Warner Arena December 18, 2008

The long awaited return of AC/DC, one of the greatest rock and roll bands in history didn’t let anyone down. The concert was at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC on December 18, 2008 at 7:30PM. The opening act was a classic rock band from Northern Ireland called “The Answer”. They had the 70’s rock theme going on. They were good musicians but a little polished for my taste. I like my rock with more of a raw edge. They got a good reception from Charlotte and they did seem to have their hearts in it. So I still have to give them 3 stars. After all, being a band that nobody has heard of yet and opening for AC/DC has to be a bitch.

AC/DC started with huge digital video screens of an animated runaway steam locomotive traveling down the tracks. Angus is stoking the fire in full devil regalia and is distracted by some hot babes . Brian seems to be getting ahead in the passenger compartment. The train crashes into the stage in the video and then a huge 40 foot long prop steam locomotive crashes onto the actual stage. Fire, steam, and explosions happen and are a great way for the band to enter and begin and start with the song “Rock N’ Roll Train” from the new album “Black Ice”. The crowd stood up and never sat down for the rest of the night.

The sound system was incredible. I wouldn’t really call it a concert. I was more like a Rock N’ Roll assault on Charlotte. The sound system was so loud and clean that some of the notes just punched you in the face. Drummer Phil Rudd probably caused structural damage to the building, God Bless him. I hope there were noise complaints in the next state.

Guitarist Angus Young stole the show with his ripping guitar solos and his onstage antics. He and singer Brian Johnson didn’t leave anything. They both gave 120% to people that paid 100 dollars a pop and waited months to go to the show. The whole band seemed like they were in great shape and well prepared for the tour. There was nothing sloppy about any song. They all sounded fantastic.

My personal favorites during the show were “Rock N’ Roll Train” because of the theatrics and the killer tune. “Whole Lotta Rosie” because its one of my personal favorites and Rosie made a surprise appearance I didn’t expect. And you couldn’t beat the encore of “Highway to Hell” and “For Those Bout To Rock ( We Salute You) ” with 6 cannons blazing.

I have to say that Angus Young is probably the greatest living “Rock” guitarist. I’ve seen a lot. He is a no frills, in your face, kick your ass guitar player. He is Rock N’ Roll. I don’t think I’ve seen a better show in 20 years. If you ever get a chance to see AC/DC live, I wouldn’t pass it up.
